Last night (June 26), Rep. Joe Crowley, one of the top democrats in the House of Representatives, lost his New York primary to 28 year-old community organizer Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The Bronx-born politician has been advocating for the disposal of ICE, Medicare for all, and gun control, among other things.
“This is the start of a movement. Thank you all,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted on June 27.
This win wasn’t without praise from her supporters, like actress and activist Susan Sarandon and actress and Governor of New York candidate Cynthia Nixon. The former Ted Kennedy staffer also received congratulations from fellow Democrats, former Presidential candidate Bernie Sander and even from her opponent Rep. Joe Crowley.
Ocasio-Cortez will now head into the general election in New York’s 14th district and continue campaigning for her cause.
Check out some of the reactions to Ocasio-Cortez’s win:
Fuck yeah! People over the Machine. Congrats @Ocasio2018 for proving that Democracy is possible. ———— https://t.co/HvPxmnFTaF

We endorsed @Ocasio2018 because we believe she is the future of the Democratic Party. Today, she ousted 10-term incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley. Here in New York, the progressive revolution has begun, and we could not be more proud to be a part of that movement. #ForTheMany pic.twitter.com/uEEbbj8qaI

Congratulations to @Ocasio2018 on her extraordinary upset victory tonight! She took on the entire local Democratic establishment in her district and won a very strong victory. She demonstrated once again what progressive grassroots politics can do.

I want to congratulate @Ocasio2018. I look forward to supporting her and all Democrats this November. The Trump administration is a threat to everything we stand for here in Queens and the Bronx, and if we don’t win back the House this November, we will lose the nation we love.

Of course, when the results of the primary were revealed, President Trump had to chime in:
Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!
