Welcome to #TBT Mixtape, Billboard’s series that showcases artists’ very own throwback-themed playlists exclusive to Billboard’s Spotify account. The curated set features the artists’ favorite tracks from their youth and childhood.
This week’s spin comes from Alex Winston. The Detroit-bred, Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter is in the midst of a 2018 comeback, after years of label strife and a struggle with Lyme Disease that saw her exit her previous partnership with 300 Entertainment, following the release of her 2015 EP The Day I Died.
Earlier this summer, Winston released a new EP Crown as one half of Post Precious, a side project alongside MS MR’s Max Hershenow, which included collaborations with the likes of Charli XCX and Ryn Weaver. This Monday (August 7), Winston returned to her solo moniker with the release of her latest single “Tourist,” an epic takedown of an ex. “It can be validating and heartbreaking when your intuition is right, especially when you don’t want it to be,” Winston says of the track. “I learned that the hard way with this one. Everything is always prettier when you’re just visiting.”
Today, the pop artist is looking back with this week’s #TBT Mixtape, an ode to her own Bat Mitvah (“the year I peaked”), and featuring classic ’00s staples from Baha Men, Vengaboys, Mystikal, KC & Jojo and more.
Give the set a spin and check out a retro snap of the artist at said Bat Mitzvah below. Also catch Alex performing tonight (August 9) at The Bloc in Los Angeles, as well as at Neon Gold Records’ 10th Anniversary fete next month (Sept. 29) at The Knockdown Center in New York City, alongside The Knocks, Marina & The Diamonds, Broods, and more.
