Swedish DJ/Producer Alesso sat down with Billboard to talk through his all-star collaboration “Let Me Go,” which features Hailee Steinfeld, Florida Georgia Line and Watt, as part of our “How It Went Down” video series.
“Let It Go” first came to life when singer-songwriter Andrew Watt emailed the producer a track he had written with songwriter Ali Tamposi. “I loved it right away,” says Alesso. “I started working on it, I sent it back two, three days later, [Watt] literally called me right away and showed up to my doorstep, was freaking out how much he loved the new version I made.”
The two then began discussing which vocal artists would feature on the track, when Watt suggested Florida Georgia Line. Alesso shares that when he got the duo’s vocal part, he was “blown away” by how new and fresh it sounded. It was then that he and Watt decided to recruit their mutual friend Steinfeld.
“It’s kind of an unexpected collaboration – Andrew, me, Florida Georgia Line and Hailee,” explains Alesso. “It doesn’t really make any sense, but the song turned out to be great so it made sense, I guess, and people seem to really like it and that makes us really happy.”
Alesso also divulges a fun fact about the song, telling Billboard that the drop in the song is his voice singing, clarifying that it is “obviously very tweaked and tuned.”
