Singer-songwriter Alec Benjamin was featured Tuesday morning (March 19) on the Today show, performing his single “Let Me Down Slowly.”
While hanging out in the Artist Lounge, he revealed the meaning of his breakout song — which features Alessia Cara — saying it’s “about when you feel like your heart is in someone else’s hands and you’re not quite sure what is going to happen. You’re kind of at their mercy.”
Also during the conversation, the 24-year-old Phoenix native described the trials and tribulations of early success. “I got signed and dropped. And then after I got dropped, I didn’t know what to do. So I started following other people’s concerts around. I would go and sing to fans in parking lots and hand out business cards and things like that.”
Now with his debut album, Narrated for You, out in the world, he is getting ready to set out on his own tour. “Let Me Down Slowly,” meanwhile, has more than 142 million on-demand streams in the U.S., according to Nielsen Music.
