The latest popular musician to hit Broadway is Alanis Morissette. A new musical titled “Jagged Little Pill” — based off the landmark 1995 album of the same name — will hit the stage as a workshop production in 2014.
Though no announcements have been made regarding the cast, “Jagged Little Pill” will be produced by Arvind Ethan David and Vivek J. Tiwary, the latter of which was behind the Broadway adaptation of Green Day’s “American Idiot.” Another collaborator in the Green Day musical, Tony Award winner Tom Kitt, will provide orchestrations and arrangements.
All 12 tracks that originally appeared on “Jagged Little Pill” will appear in the production, along with selections from Morissette’s other albums and new originals the singer-songwriter will produce specifically for the show.
“I look forward to taking the heart of ‘Jagged Little Pill’ and expanding its story, fleshing it out into ever deeper layers of emotionality, specificity, humanity, power, physicality, spirit and fabulism,” Morissette says via press release. “I look forward to collaborating with Vivek and Tom and our whole inspiring team to create something greater than the sum of our parts.”
“Jagged Little Pill” sold over 33 million copies worldwide and is recognized as the highest-selling album of the 1990s. It topped the Billboard 200 for 12 weeks upon its release and won the Grammy for Album of the Year. Half of its tracks — six of them — turned into successful singles, like “You Oughta Know,” which won the Grammy for Best Rock Song.
Lately, popular music has been leaving quite an impression on Broadway, as “Jagged Little Pill” joins shows like “Motown: The Musical,” the Four Seasons bio “Jersey Boys,” and “A Night With Janis Joplin” in connecting the big stage to rock and pop fans. “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” also debuts in January 2014.
