Akdong Musician‘s debut album Play kick-started their K-pop career with a two-week No. 1 on the K-Pop Hot 100, two additional top 10 hits and entry into Billboard’s Heatseekers Chart. Akdong Musician (aka AKMU) return today with a seasonal new single “Time and Fallen Leaves.”
According to AKMU’s record label YG Entertainment, the song was originally recorded for Play, but instead held off for a fall release given its theme and sentiment. Over subtle guitar strums, soaring strings and gorgeous piano, the brother and sister sing of going through memories in fall in an effort to let go of the people holding them back along with the falling leaves; reckoning the changes in the weather with their personal reflections.
Like the rest of the Play tracks, “Time and Fallen Leaves” was written and composed by 18-year-old Lee Chan Hyuk. But unlike its three singles “200%,” “Melted” and “Give Love,” this new track will not get an accompanying music video — a deliberate choice, according to their record label.
YG Entertainment’s chief producer Yang Hyun-Suk, one of Billboard‘s 2014 International Power Players, added that due to the emotions the track evokes, the company would rather have listeners “imagine their own stories instead of watching a video.”
The new single from the 21 Under 21 honorees is the latest melancholic, acoustic-leaning ballad that is popular for the season in Korea. It joins Roy Kim‘s “Home” as the latest autumnal hit this fall.
