Against Me! is ready to “put the nail in the coffin of the ‘New Wave’ tour” for its latest album and get to work on some new music, according to drummer Warren Oakes.
“I know (frontman) Tom (Gabel) has been writing this whole time,” Oakes tells Billboard.com. “We’ll probably take a little holiday break, then just get together and start collaborating and start fleshing those songs out and work on writing for most of the early part of next year.”
Oakes says Against Me! will also “probably do some shows some time in the spring, perhaps, to road test some of those new songs.” Most importantly, he adds, the punk quartet — which plans to record again with “New Wave” producer Butch Vig — doesn’t plan to hurry the process.
“We’ll get in the studio when the time is right,” he explains, “when we have a batch of songs that are ready to go. The biggest pressure that’s ever been put on this band has come internally, every step of the way. So we’re just gonna take the time to get it right.”
Against Me! wraps its current North American tour on Oct. 28 in Los Angeles and has a Dec. 8 show booked in Zurich. During the interim, Gabel will go out again on the Revival Tour with Hot Water Music’s Chuck Ragan, Lucero’s Ben Nichols and Avail’s Tim Barry. He also plans to play some solo dates to promote his new EP, “Heart Burns,” due Oct. 28 on Sire.
“We’re all for it,” Oakes notes of Gabel’s solo work. “People that respond to his voice are interested in hearing any incarnation that it comes in. We hear all the time at shows that the first thing someone ever heard was an acoustic EP from years ago or an acoustic song that (Gabel) did for a compilation. For a lot of people that’s their first exposure, their first foot in the door, and then it makes sense to translate to hearing some of those songs rendered by the full band after that.”
