Adele continued her U.K. chart supremacy as new sales data was unveiled yesterday (Sunday) by the Official Charts Company. Her sophomore album “21” (XL) began a fifth week atop the album chart as “Someone Like You” moved into a second week at No. 1 on the singles survey, the latter with sales of more than 110,000 for the second week in a row.
Also for the second week, Adele has two titles in both the singles and albums top fives, with the “21” track “Rolling In The Deep” holding at No. 4, while her previous album “19” climbed 4-2. OCC data reveals that it’s the first time in close to 12 years since one artist had the top two on the album and singles charts. In March 1999, Irish sibling act the Corrs achieved the feat when “Talk On Corners” was No. 1 and “Forgiven, Not Forgotten” No. 2.
The other big winner of the U.K. sales week was the “Glee” cast. “‘Glee’ The Music Volume 4” (Epic/Sony Music Entertainment) debuted at No. 4 on the album chart, while Gwyneth Paltrow’s recent performances in the show brought two top 40 appearances for the actress and the “Glee” cast, “Singing In The Rain”/”Umbrella” at No. 22 and “Forget You” at No. 31.
Rihanna’s “Loud” album (Def Jam/Universal) held at No. 3 as the single “S&M” climbed 6-3. Cee Lo Green’s “The Lady Killer” (Warner Bros./Warner Music) improved again, 11-9, and its former No. 1 single “Forget You” also moved up again, 19-14. British pop band JLS posted a 20-10 climb with the album “Outta This World” (Epic/Sony Music Entertainment).
After the “Glee” album, the next highest debut on the artist album chart fell to Justin Bieber’s “Never Say Never – The Remixes” (Def Jam/ Universal), new to the top 75 at No. 17. The single “Never Say Never,” featuring Jaden Smith, climbed 49-34.
Also on the singles chart, Alexis Jordan debuted at No. 6 with “Good Girl” (Rocnation/Starroc/Columbia/Sony Music Entertainment) and Pink jumped 13-10 with “F***in Perfect” (LaFace/Sony Music Entertainment).
“BRIT Awards 2011” (Rhino/Warner Music) stayed top of the compilation album chart.
