Adele’s debut, “19” (XL Recordings), entered the U.K. album chart at No. 1, delivering on the critical acclaim it has garnered, while “Now You’re Gone” (Hard2Beat) by Basshunter featuring DJ Mental Theos started a fourth week atop the U.K. singles chart.
London-born singer-songwriter Adele’s “19” has already led to a BRIT Award, the new Critics’ Choice honor, which she will receive at the Feb. 20 event at London’s Earls Court. The album’s high debut also follows the success of her first full single “Chasing Pavements,” which spends a third week at No. 2. Her previous limited edition single “Hometown Glory” has also just charted, landing at No. 32 on download sales.
“19” has pushed Scouting For Girls’ self-titled Epic set to No. 2.
Nickelback’s surge in U.K. sales continued with a 10-3 climb for the 2005 release “All The Right Reasons” (Roadunner), and the single “Rockstar” held at No. 3. Welsh rock band Bullet For My Valentine’s “Scream Aim Fire” (20-20 Ent/Visible Noise) arrived at a career-best No. 5, and there was notable posthumous success for one of England’s first wave of rock ‘n’ rollers, Billy Fury. The TV-advertised “His Wondrous Story -The Complete Billy Fury” (UMTV) arrived at No. 15, a matter of days after the 25th anniversary of his death. Fury scored 11 U.K. top ten hits between 1960 and 1965.
The singles chart also included a 7-4 climb for Kelly Rowland’s “Work,” the second single from her 2007 RCA album “Ms. Kelly.” “Work” slot matches the U.K. peak of the album’s previous single, “Like this.” British electro band Hot Chip earned the top new entry with “Ready For The Floor” at No. 6. The song is included on the album “Made In The Dark,” released in the U.K.
today.
One Night Only are another British band enjoying a top ten breakthrough. The five-year-old North Yorkshire rock act climbed 49-9 with the single “Just For Tonight” (Vertigo). New York-born, London-based David Jordan also scored his first top ten success, climbing 22-10 with “Sun Goes Down” (Mercury).
Mary J. Blige’s “Just Fine” (Geffen), meanwhile, built on last week’s 47-28 climb by progressing to No. 16. The American R&B singer has had a number of U.K. chart entries in recent years in collaboration with U2, Ja Rule and others, but this is her first top 20 single as a purely solo artist in the territory since “No More Drama” reached No. 9 in 2002.
The final top 20 singles newcomer was “Still Figuring Out” (Warner Bros.) by British pop band Elliot Minor. With the song’s debut at No. 17, the York-based group scored their fourth top 40 hit, their highest-ranked to date.
Meanwhile on Billboard’s pan-European sales charts, Amy Winehouse heads European Top 100 Albums for a sixth week and “Apologize”
(Mosley/Blackground/Interscope) by Timbaland presents One Republic is in its 11th week atop Eurochart Hot 100 Singles, equalling Rihanna’s epic run at the summit last year with “Umbrella” (SRP/Def Jam).
