AC/DC’s “Black Ice” (Columbia) trumped Kaiser Chiefs’ “Off With Their Heads” (B Unique/Polydor/Universal) to seize the No. 1 crown on the new U.K. album chart yesterday (Oct. 26). Girls Aloud’s “The Promise” (Fascination/Polydor/Universal) made a No.1 start on the singles survey, becoming the pop band’s third U.K. chart-topper.
AC/DC has not led the British album chart for 28 years, since its classic “Back In Black” spent its first two weeks at No. 1 in August 1980. “Black Ice” is the veteran rock act’s tenth U.K. top 10 album, and a return to sales form, after its last set, 2000’s “Stiff Upper Lip,” peaked at No. 12 in a brief four-week chart run. Their last top 10 was “Ballbreaker” in 1995. AC/DC, who visit the U.K. for arena shows next April, start a world tour tomorrow in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
That comeback deprived Kaiser Chiefs of another No. 1, as the Leeds band’s third album arrived in the runner-up spot. Their 2005 debut “Employment” reached No. 3, but climbed back to No. 2 the following year after the quintet’s Brit Awards success. Sophomore set “Yours Truly, Angry Mob” debuted at No. 1 in March of last year.
Former “X Factor” winner Leon Jackson’s debut album “Right Now” (Syco Music/Sony Music) entered at No. 4, a week after its single “Don’t Call This Love” single came in at No. 3. Welsh mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins started at No. 5 with “Sacred Arias” (UCJ/Universal) and pop trio Sugababes at No. 8 with “Catfights and Spotlights” (Universal Island). German dance act Sash! had the sixth new top 10 title of the week with a “Best Of” set released by dance indie Hard2Beat at No. 10, a week after “Raindrops (Encore Une Fois),” featuring Stunt, entered at No. 9, where it remained yesterday.
The Girls Aloud single is their 18th consecutive U.K. top 10 hit, 10 of which have reached the top three. “The Promise” is the lead single from their forthcoming fifth studio album, “Out of Control.” Pink’s three-week run at No. 1 with “So What” (LaFac) thus came to an end; that fell to No. 2 as “Infinity 2008” by Guru Josh Project, a remix of acid house artist Guru Josh’s 1989 hit, raced 56-3 on download sales.
The other big climbers in the new singles top 10 were Razorlight’s “Wire to Wire” (Vertigo/Universal), up 30-5, and Katy Perry’s “Hot N Cold” (Virgin), 26-7. Kanye West’s “Love Lockdown” (Def Jam) also made the top 10 in its fifth chart week, climbing 11-8. Jack White & Alicia Keys” James Bond theme “Another Way To Die,” which last week dipped to No. 27 after three weeks at No. 26, finally made the top 20, at No. 18.
Metallica is in a sixth week atop Billboard’s European Top 100 Albums chart with “Death Magnetic” (Vertigo/Universal), while Pink’s hit moves 2-1 on Eurochart Hot 100 Singles.
