Yoga. It’s not just for gurus and granola hippies anymore. It’s not even just for middle-class moms and sorority sisters. Yoga is for everyone, and with yoga classes frequently included in the offerings at many dance music festivals, the practice could be an integral part of your eletronic dance music lifestyle, especially if you love Above & Beyond.
The English trio has always had a knack for relaxing escape music, with its greatest trance classics creating safe spaces of melody and mood. But the group was recently inspired to bring a more focused yogic intention to its output. Earlier this week A&B announced Flow State, a multi-faceted project centered around an album by the same name. The Flow State LP is a 49-minute exploration of ambient and neo-classical themes composed of new tracks and reimagined catalog favorites.
This meditative project was inspired by a chance encounter with yoga instructor and expert Elena Brower, who the trio met when she was leading a yoga session at Burning Man’s Robot Heart camp in 2014. After the experience, A&B began starting some of its biggest shows with a yoga session, including recent events at the Gorge Amphitheater in Washington and in Huntington Beach, Calif.
“Our music has always been about getting in touch with, and understanding and accepting our emotions,” Above & Beyond’s Paavo Siljamaki is quoted in a press release. “After those amazing yoga sets, we realized that there is a bigger place for this more reflective music within our little universe. With the Flow State project, we want to help bring people’s attention and focus towards helping themselves find better mental fitness and overall happiness in life. Through raised awareness, being more present, one can reach a state of flow: a creative and free state of mind where time, fear and stress dissipate.”
Flow State is more than just an album, however. The soundtrack will come to life for fans at a special series of yoga events across the United States and beyond. Above & Beyond is teaming with Daybreaker, the popular morning movement class that invites urbanites to an hour of yoga followed by two hours of dancing before heading off to work, for many of these events. While most dates are localized events with Flow State providing soundtrack, select dates in New York City, Wanderlust SoCal and the Group Therapy Weekender at The Gorge will feature a live performance from A&B with classes led by Brower in the flesh.
The full Flow State album is due for release via Anjunabeats on Friday, July 19. The group shared a three-track sampler of the LP last Friday in celebration of International Yoga Day. The sneak peek features a new track called “Believer” as well as reimagined A&B classics “Small Moments” and “Sun In Your Eyes.” Listen to the EP and check the full list of Flow State yoga tour dates below.
