A$AP Rocky’s mom has given an update on the rapper’s current state of mind, and she’s now convinced his detention in Sweden is a race issue.
Speaking to TMZ, Renee Black said she’d spoken only once to her son since his arrest. “He sounded ok, he sounded alright considering the circumstances,” she told the gossip website. “But he wanna come home.”
Rocky (real name Rakim Mayers) has been held in custody without charges since the start of the month, due to his involvement in a fight on the streets of Stockholm, the capital. Videos circulated on social media appear to show a man being violently tossed by the hip-hop artist, though his lawyer has said his client was acting in self-defense.
“I feel like Sweden is making an example out of our boy. It’s so unjust,” Black continued.
A string of celebrities have spoken up in support of Rocky, including Kanye West, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Nicki Minaj, and Post Malone. President Donald Trump said he raised the issue during a chat with Sweden’s prime minister Stefan Löfven on the weekend, though the hip-hop artist and two co-defendants remain behind bars, for now.
When asked if she thought the Swedish government has issue with rappers or black men in general, Black responded, “I don’t want to call the race card, ok, but that’s what it’s looking like. If it walks like a duck and it quacks like a duck, then it’s a duck”.
A district court judge in Stockholm last week ruled that Rocky was a flight risk and ordered that he remain behind bars while officials investigate the case. Authorities have until Thursday (June 25) to decide whether or not to charge him with assault, and a ruling is expected later Friday.
The other man involved in the June 30 brawl will not be charged, Swedish prosecutors said on Monday.
