A new trailer for Lifetime’s controversial Aaliyah biopic is here. As you can see below, this quick clip provides curious onlookers with a glimpse at cable TV’s approximation of the late R&B icon set to the music of…Iggy Azalea?
While Lifetime almost certainly couldn’t license an actual Aaliyah song for the trailer — much like Andre 3000’s Jimi Hendrix biopic, her family is blocking this movie at every opportunity — it still seems odd to hear Azalea’s “Goddess” over footage of Alexandra Shipp as Aaliyah.

But then again, Azalea has paid tribute to Aaliyah in the past — her 2013 track “Backseat Trill Shit” sampled Aaliyah’s “One In a Million.” At the very least, Azalea’s lyric “Bow down to a goddess” is fitting enough for the subject matter.
Watch it below and see if you think Zendaya made the right choice dropping out of this beleaguered biopic before production started.
