Far be it from me to toot the Billboard horn, but it’s easy to see that the “2003 Billboard Latin Music Awards” is one of the biggest Latin music events of the year. The star-studded event takes place Thursday at Miami Arena and will be broadcast Sunday by Telemundo.
Hosted by actress Roselyn Sanchez, singer/actor Carlos Ponce, and actor Miguel Varoni, the show will feature wall-to-wall musical performances. Check out Ricky Martin, Pilar Montenegro, Chayanne, Intocable, Thalia, Alexandre Pires, A.B. Quintanilla III & Kumbia Kings, Grupo Limite, Eros Ramazzotti, Gilberto Santa Rosa, and David Bisbal.
Telemundo’s coverage will begin with “La Alfombra Roja de Billboard,” an hour-long pre-show from the red carpet. Following the three-hour awards program, the Spanish-language network will wrap with a one-hour special, “Billboard: La Fiesta.”
But that’s not until the end of the week. On the way there, there’s plenty of music on the air. Monday will feature Lifehouse performing on Fox’s “Boston Public.” The show will also feature one time “American Idol” contestant Tamyra Gray in her recurring role as Aisha, who deals with a shifty record producer played by rapper Method Man. Rapper GQ and Joey McIntyre also guest star on this week’s episode.
Did I mention “American Idol”? I did… and that’s because like millions of others, I’m caught up in the game, also on Fox. It was a scary moment for Ruben Studdard last week, but in the end it was Trenyce who voters booted from the show. Now it’s down to four, with Clay Aikens, Joshua Gracin, and Kimberley Locke joining Ruben. Watch ’em perform and vote for your fave on Tuesday; see the results on Wednesday. It’s gonna be a big week for Metallica fans. On May 3, the band was celebrated as this year’s “mtvICON.” The festivities — which included performances by Korn, Limp Bizkit, Sum 41, and Avril Lavigne — will be shown Tuesday on MTV. Others appearing were Steven Tyler and Joe Perry from Aerosmith, Travis Barker from Blink-182, Lisa Marie Presley, Aaron Lewis and Mike Mushok from Staind, Chester Bennington from Linkin Park, and Slash will join actors Jim Breuer, Sean Penn, and Lara Flynn Boyle.
If that’s not enough, Metallica will be guests on the first episode of the reactivated “Headbangers Ball,” Saturday night on MTV2. Rob Zombie will host and your sure to see a whole new crop of metal videos.
Mariah Carey will surely draw thousands to New York’s Rockefeller Center Friday morning for her outdoor performance on NBC’s “Today.” And look for a Jackson Browne cameo on Fox’s “The Simpsons” on Sunday night (as well as the voices of Jane Kaczmarek and Steve Buscemi) on an episode titled “Brake My Wife, Please.”
Saturday night, go behind the scenes of a country music superstar concert with “Faith Hill: When The Lights Go Down” on CMT. Sure to be a winner is a performance with rock legend Carlos Santana.
Sure you’ll see Keanu Reeves talking about “The Matrix 2” Thursday night on NBC’s “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno,” but the real reason to tune in will be to catch a performance by R&B/soul veterans Wilson Pickett, Sam Moore, and Mary Wilson of the Supremes.
Other highlights of the late night talk show circuit this week will be Ozomatli Monday with Kimmell (ABC), Fabolous and Lil’ Mo Tuesday with Leno (NBC),Marilyn Manson Thursday with Letterman (CBS), and Brian McKnight Friday on Kilborn (CBS).
Lastly, check your local listings for this week’s “Austin City Limits” on PBS. Many stations air the show on Saturday nights and some will show a classic episode of the performance show from 1979 featuring the one and only Tom Waits. Truly an episode not to be missed, if it’s showing in your market, that is.
