By now you should have had your fill of “The Blues” (if not, order the seven-DVD series via PBS.org). Although it’ll be hard to top last week’s rich musical programming, the vast television universe will certainly try. Let’s take a look at what’s in store:
A PBS staple, “Austin City Limits” will return this week with a new season of episodes. Steve Winwood will entertain with music from his latest solo album, About Time,” as well as highlights from his career, which has included stints with the Spencer Davis Group and Traffic (check local listings).
Also launching a new season this week is the syndicated “Soul Train.” The venerable R&B/hip-hop program will welcome new host Dorian Gregory, as well as Jeffrey Osborne and Anthony Hamilton (check local listings). Also look for Hamilton Wednesday night on CBS’ “The Late Show With David Letterman.”
Also on multiple shows will be singer/songwriter Pete Yorn, who will perform on CBS’ “The Late Late Show with Craig Killborn” on Monday and NBC’s “Last Call With Carson Daly” on Wednesday.”
“Monday Night at the Mic” segment of ABC’s “Monday Night Football (which will feature the Indianapolis Colts vs. the Tampa Bay Buccaneers) will see the second match-up of players and musical acts in a showdown. This week, St. Louis Rams offensive tackle Kyle Turley plays with 3 Doors Down in a challenge against Bucs kicker Martin Gramatica and his brother, Arizona Cardinals kicker Bill Gramatica, who will be playing with Santana.
Not enough to draw you into the game? How about Snoop Dogg dropping some rhymes while Hank Williams Jr. wails about whether or not you are ready for some football? Yeah, that’ll do.
Justin Timberlake will pull double-duty on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” where he will host and serve as musical guest. (See how many jabs at Britney you can count…)
Other highlights will be rapper Ludacris‘ performance on Tuesday’s “Total Request Live” (MTV), Lou Rawls performing and Eve chatting on Wednesday’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” (ABC) and Gov’t Mule the same night on NBC’s “Late Night With Conan O’Brien.”
Julio Iglesias Jr. will perform his ingle “Dejame Volar” Monday night on the UPN sitcom “Eve,” starring, um, Eve. Carmen Elektra and Corey Reynolds also guest star on the episode.
And don’t miss the usually outrageous Lil Kim guest starring as Shirley Ellis on NBC’s “American Dreams.” Instead of rapping, Kim will be performing Ellis’ “The Clapping Song (Clap Pat Clap Slap),” a No. 8 hit on Billboard’s pop chart in 1965.
And, finally, if your musical education jones remains unfulfilled following last week’s PhD course in the blues, there are two options this week. ABC’s “Primetime Monday” will focus on life in New Orleans, including a segment with veteran keys tickler Dr. John.
Then, on Sunday, tune into the Sundance channel’s showing of “24 Hour Party People.” The 2002 docudrama chronicles the 1980s Manchester (England) music scene, Factory Records and such acts as Joy Division, New Order and Happy Mondays.
It’s a week of musical treats that are sure to blow away your blues.
