50 Cent still has no competitors on The Billboard 200 as “The Massacre” sells 771,000 U.S. copies in its second week at No. 1, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Despite a 32% drop for the Shady/Aftermath/Interscope album, it sold more than half a million units more than the set in the No. 2 slot, Jack Johnson’s “In Between Dreams” (Brushfire).
That album, which debuted at No. 3 last week, ousts Jennifer Lopez’s “Rebirth” (Epic) from No. 2 despite a 49% fall to 118,000. Lopez slips to No. 4 on a 67% slide to 86,000, while 50 Cent labelmate the Game jumps 5-3 with “The Documentary.” The set dips 13% to 87,000 copies.
Green Day’s “American Idiot” (Reprise) gains 6-5 with a 10% drop to 77,000 units, while a 6% fall to 59,000 is enough to boost Kelly Clarkson’s “Breakaway” (RCA) 9-6. Ray Charles’ “Genius Loves Company” (Concord/Hear Music) spends a second week at No. 7 with a 30% slip to 56,000 copies.
In its 39th week on the chart, the Killers’ “Hot Fuss” (Island) enters the top 10 for the first time with a 14-8 move. Rounding out the top tier, John Legend’s “Get Lifted” climbs 11-9 despite a 13% fall to 53,000 and Eminem’s “Encore” (Shady/Aftermath/Interscope) is No. 10 for a second week with a 14% dip to 52,000.
Black Label Society’s “Black Mafia” (Artemis) is the top debut at No. 15 with 42,000 copies. Fronted by former Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Zakk Wylde, the group scores its highest spot on the big chart and the No. 1 slot on the Billboard Top Independent Albums chart. The band went as high as No. 40 with last year’s “Hangover Music, Vol. VI,” which opened with 24,000 units and has sold 113,000 so far.
Rocketing 36-17, Kenny Chesney’s “Be As You Are: Songs From an Old Blue Chair” (BNA) is one of the few Billboard 200 titles to see a gain this week, spurred by his appearance on a re-run of “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” In addition, his 2004 album “When the Sun Goes Down” jumps 9% to 21,000, spurring a 63-45 increase on the chart.
Fellow country artist Craig Morgan enters the chart at No. 40 with “My Kind of Livin'” (Broken Bow), which sold 22,000 copies in its first week. Other chart debuts include Kasabian’s self-titled RCA set at No. 94, Ronan Tynan’s “Ronan” (Decca) at No. 149 and Deana Carter’s “The Story of My Life” (Vanguard) at No. 150.
Overall U.S. album sales are down 11% from last week at 10.8 million units, about 7% lower than the same week last year. Sales for the year are 9% below 2004 at 111 million units.
