50 Cent has previewed his fifth studio album, “Street King Immortal,” with the pop single “My Life.” The track, which features Eminem and Maroon 5‘s Adam Levine, was debuted live on “The Voice” on Monday night (Nov. 26) before its official video was released on Tuesday morning.
Although Eminem wasn’t on hand to deliver “My Life,” 50 Cent and “Voice” coach Levine tried their darnedest to convey the song’s emotional core while the rapper’s name flashed in the background. “Forty million records, people forgot what I did!” 50 rapped over a beat constructed by Symbolyc One, while Levine romped across the stage and waited for his turn to deliver the soul-baring hook. Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton certainly seemed to enjoy the new track, nodding appreciatively as their fellow coach flaunted his vocals.
All told, 50 Cent has not enjoyed a mainstream hit in more than a half-decade — 2009’s “Before I Self Destruct” failed to spawn a smash single, while his previously released “Street King Immortal” material, including “New Day” and “First Date,” has yet to register a pulse. But the “Voice” debut of “My Life” may help guide the song to a solid audience; after all, Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera’s “Moves Like Jagger” topped the Hot 100 after debuting live on the NBC reality behemoth last year. Meanwhile, Levine has continuously proven his Top 40 prowess, most recently with Maroon 5’s “One More Night,” a nine-week Hot 100 champ.
The official music video for “My Life” was also released on Tuesday morning, and features 50, Levine and Eminem racing against a helicopter while lurking in their respective shadows. The Detroit-set official clip has the advantage of including Em’s verse, which is as furious and furiously paced as his brilliant guest spot on Drake’s “Forever.”
With its debut performance on Monday night and the video launch the following morning, “My Life” is now available at all digital retailers. “Street King Immortal” has been saddled with an early 2013 release plan on Shady/Aftermath/Interscope, after initially being pegged for release this year.
