5 Seconds of Summer recently jumped back into the music scene with their first single in two years, “Want You Back” and a 26-date tour. The Australian pop-rock group sat down with Radio.com to discuss the nerve wracking feeling of releasing music after a hiatus, and the inspiration behind their new song.
According to bassist Calum Hood, “Want You Back” came easily and naturally. “It was quite an organic procedure writing it, the process wasn’t strenuous; it was very free flowing.”
Guitarist Michael Clifford chimed in about the motivation and re-found energy that comes with making great songs over a span of two years: “I think we were so nervous, and I think we still are really nervous about the rest of the record. We’ve lived with the songs for two years, but I think that’s what’s making us so driven to make sure it’s the best it can be.”
“This era of 5 Seconds of Summer feels like the first era to us, which is amazing,” Ashton Irwin mirrored.
While details for the upcoming record have yet to be announced, the band’s tour kicks of March 20 in Stockholm, Sweden.
