If we needed any more confirmation that we’re currently re-living the ‘90s — a la reemergence of comeback ‘90s trends like corduroy, silk slipdresses, one-piece jumpers, denim on denim, super-high-waist “mom jeans,” and track pants — this year’s VH1 Hip-Hop Honors will prove that the ’90s have definitely taken over 2017.
Celebs hit the red carpet at Los Angeles’ Paramount Studios for the event on Sunday (Sept. 17) clad in ‘90s attire synonymous with the decade — colorful outfits, fanny packs, gaudy chains, bamboo earrings, track suits and classic shell toe Adidas.
The show, a nod to “’90s game changers,” will feature some of the biggest icons of the time period — stars responsible for driving the hip-hop culture into mainstream society. Missy Elliott is scheduled to open the show with a vibrant musical performance featuring Lil’ Kim, while Mariah Carey and Jermaine Dupree will take the stage and be honored for their success in the industry. A slew of other performers — Da Brat, Fat Joe, Remy Ma, The Lox, Xscape, Havoc, and Ty Dolla $ign — add to the event’s musical roster.
Comedian Martin Lawrence, who reinvented the comedy landscape with his hit sitcom Martin, rapper and record label founder Master P, and famed video director Hype Williams are also among honorees for the night.
The 2017 Hip-Hop Honors airs Monday (Sept. 18) at 9 p.m. on VH1.
