The Tu Música Urban Awards are set to return in 2020, Mr. & Mrs. Entertainment and Sora TV announced. The second annual gala has been scheduled for March 5.
The awards show premiered in Puerto Rico this year with performances by Daddy Yankee, Ozuna and Natti Natasha, among others. Although there was initial uncertainty about an awards show held in Puerto Rico, it was a huge success; according to organizers, it was seen in 52 countries by 80 million viewers after combining the television live broadcast on Telemundo and Telemundo Internacional with free streaming worldwide.
“We were a success thanks to the support of all artists,” José “Pompi” Vallejo, co-owner of Mr. & Mrs. Entertainment, tells Billboard.
The list of nominees for the second annual Tu Música Urban Awards will be revealed on Dec. 11, including new categories. “Urban music is being fused with many genres and that led us to consider new categories,” adds producer Soraya Sánchez.
The event recognizes urban singers who have great presence worldwide, as well as the local figures who have made their way into the international music scene. A select group of music industry representatives with knowledge of the urban genre — including radio programmers, announcers, influencers and journalists — vote for the final winners.
