Last week’s U.S. presidential election results — which declared Donald Trump the 45th president — sparked a mix of responses within voters and, in a way, left the country with a perception of divisiveness. For singer-songwriter Tommy Torres, the sense of a divided country inspired him to write a song of unity and hope.
“I wrote this feeling a great division between us, when we’re all so alike,” explains Torres in a Facebook post, which features video of him singing “Aprenderemos,” accompanied by a melancholy piano tune.
Torres also included a translation of the Spanish track. Part of the lyrics read: “Some day, I hope not too long from now, we will hold each other’s hands and love each other. We shall learn how to do just that. When our decisions are controlled by fear our sight gets blurry, we don’t see our options. When the game of money and greed gets overflown by our needs, we sell ourselves. When hate becomes part of our speeches we forget that to God, we are all made equal. When the suffering becomes too big to bear, only then, my dear, we will change.”
