What makes a song a global hit? That’s the question that initiated debate between producers Steve Aoki, RedOne and Mauricio Refigno & Andres Torres during the Producing for the Global Market panel moderated by Billboard’s Latin chart manager Pamela Bustios.
The 45-minute panel prompted discussion on how songs like “Despacito” and “Mi Gente” became global hits by being from the Latin culture but with different sounds. Aoki, RedOne, Refigno and Torres offered up tips about how to work with artists with different cultural backgrounds and create global hits.
Below, find the best quotes from the global hit producers:
“When I’m in the studio with other artists who aren’t speaking English, like BTS or Daddy Yankee, it’s all about how to connect with the global culture.” – Steve Aoki
“There’s a beat that connects everybody. A signature in the beat that people can feel, there’s a melody, because the melody is the universal language.” — RedOne
“Every song starts from an authentic place. But something weird has to happen in order for people to remember the song.” — Mauricio Refigno & Andres Torres
