Straight from Barcelona, Shakira joined the “Global Goal: Unite for Our Future” virtual concert Saturday (June 27) to send a message of hope amid the worldwide health crisis.
“Latin America is now the hardest-hit region of this pandemic and experts say Africa will be next,” the Colombian songstress expressed. “We need to make sure that everyone has security and access to healthcare in these places or it’ll make distributing and vaccinating that much harder. We must do everything we can to help them avoid catastrophic damage. Thousands of lives could be in danger by the virus itself and other life-threatening effects of poverty, such as hunger. We can all do something about it and that’s why we’re here today.”
During the Livestream, hosted by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Shak performed her inspirational “Sale El Sol” joined by three musicians on top of a rooftop.
“This next song is about the moment you start to see the sun break through after hard times,” she noted. “As we walk the road to recovery, let’s help the most vulnerable regions in the world walk towards theirs because the sun should come out for everyone.”
Many artists, including J Balvin, Justin Bieber, Coldplay, and Miley Cyrus, to name a few, joined the concert to shed a light on communities disproportionately affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The concert supplements the “Global Goal: Unite for Our Future” campaign, designed by Global Citizen and the European Commission to coordinate the development of COVID-19 tests, treatments, and vaccines.
