The pop/reggaeton-infused track is the first collab between the Colombian superstars, although recently, Maluma premiered his remix to Shak and Carlos Vives‘ summer hit “La bicicleta.”
After working on the remix, Maluma confessed to Billboard that he couldn’t miss the opportunity to work with the pop star again. The “Chantaje” collaboration was made possible thanks to Sony Music, who proposed the idea after the “La bicicleta” remix.
“I was in Barcelona working with Shakira and it was an amazing experience,” Maluma says about working with Shakira. “She’s a great artist and I learned a lot while working with her.”

It’s worth mentioning that both artists are coming off collaborations with other Latin superstars, including Carlos Vives and Ricky Martin. Martin’s “Vente Pa’ Ca” featuring Maluma is currently No. 9 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart (dated Nov. 5) while “La bicicleta” lands at No. 4 on the chart.
Maluma has previously teamed up with female artists like Mexican pop star Thalía and Brazilian sensation Anitta. “It’s interesting that a lot of female artists want to collaborate with me. I had the opportunity to work with Thalía and Anitta from Brazil, we’re both young and love to dance and we wanted to show that in the video.”
On a roll with powerful collabs, Shakira is also featured on the French rapper Black M‘s new single “Comme Moi,” which dropped today.
