Based on journalist María Celeste Arrarás’ book of the same name, the gory, hard-to-watch clip opens with bloody scenes of Selena’s death.
Following the leak of the trailer, the late singer’s sister, Suzette Quintanilla, reacted on social media, calling out Arrarás: “Your book is based on a whole bunch of lies … Your source is a person who killed, cold-heartedly murdered my sister, shot her in the back and left her to die. It makes my stomach sick. What kind of world do we live in?”
On Twitter, Selena fans also seemed to be disturbed by the graphic video.

I just watched the trailer to “El Secreto De Selena” and I honestly wasn’t ready. If anyone needs me I will be under 100 blankets crying.

El Secreto De Selena NEEDS TO GO. Like why are we doing this? No Telemundo, NO.

El Secreto de Selena is way too graphic & extremely disrespectful to her & her family. The people behind it should be ashamed of themselves.

The longtime Telemundo journalist announced the miniseries back in January, which was followed by a petition online from Selena fans asking for the halt of production.
In response, Arrarás wrote an open letter to Selena fans, which reads: “My goal with this book was to share conclusions for my investigation which include many legal documents, testimonies and interviews. All of that gave me a clear idea of how Selena’s last days were and why [Yolanda] Saldivar shot her …. I have a very clear conscious.”
