Sebastian Yatra wasn’t able to attend the Latin American Music Awards on Thursday night, but he ended up one of the night’s biggest winners.
Yatra, who missed the music event because of a show he had Texas, nabbed the awards for new artist of the year and favorite pop song for “Robarte Un Beso” with Carlos Vives — two recognitions he was not expecting at all.
“Just being nominated is a huge dream,” he tells Billboard in an exclusive phone interview. “I’m very grateful for my fans, all the people who voted for me, my record label Universal, my team and Billboard for all of the support.”
As for winning favorite pop song, Yatra says his collab with Vives has changed his life. “We wrote that song together and it has touched many hearts,” he says. “We’re also nominated for song of the year at the Latin Grammys and crossing our fingers also.”
Currently, Yatra is making the rounds with “Ya No Tiene Novio” featuring Mau & Ricky, touring the U.S. with Colombian emerging artist Manuel Turizo, and preparing a new album for 2019 that he says will be the comeback of Latin pop ballads.
