Latin singer Ricky Martin stopped by Ellen to give an update on his efforts for helping Puerto Rico, where the damage from Hurricane Maria is still prominent.
Martin has raised almost $5 million for Puerto Rico — where 53 percent of the island is still without electricity. “But we’re smiling and we’re happy and we’re alive,” Martin said, thanking the audience for support. “We’re grateful for everything that’s been happening.”
“The love we’ve received from people all over the world is amazing. We’re doing our best. We just have to stay optimistic.” Martin went on to explain the complicated process of restoring power to the island: “It’s all about the poles. The only company that was building the poles went bankrupt. We need like seven thousand poles, and they can only take like two or three a week. But it’s progress.”
But Martin emphasizes that there is more to be done, and he will continue to fundraise for the island. “There [are] still kids without being able to go to school. There’s not power, there’s no water. But I want to stay optimistic. Things are going to change for the good.”
Martin is just one of the many celebrities who are working to help Puerto Rico recover from last year’s hurricane. Artists like Lin-Manuel Miranda and Beyonce have also given their support.
Martin is promoting his new drama series The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Store, which also stars Penelope Cruz. He also opened up about his wardrobe — or lack thereof — in the series. “I show my tush for the first time on television. You guys have to see. It’s really good.”
Martin even gets a gift from Ellen — a tuxedo Speedo to wear to the Golden Globes. You can check out the entire video below.
