Cardi B’s “I Like It” featuring J Balvin and Bad Bunny nabbed the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 (dated July 7), making Cardi the first female rapper with two No. 1s on the chart, following her debut hit “Bodak Yellow (Money Moves),” which topped the chart for three weeks beginning Oct. 7, 2017.
While “I Like It,” released on May 25, is at the top of everyone’s summer playlist, there’s one crucial person who didn’t get the memo: Pete Rodriguez. The Puerto Rican singer of the original “I Like it Like That” released in 1967 had no idea that the chorus of his track was sampled by Cardi until recently.
“My kids and grandkids called me and texted me about it,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “We recorded [the original] in 1967, so it’s come a long way.”
His grandkids schooled him on Cardi B in general. “I wasn’t aware of Cardi, but my kids and grandkids were. They were all excited; they’re fans,” the 86-year-old musician said. “I’ve been out of the loop for a while, but I’ve watched some of her videos now and my favorite is definitely ‘I Like It.’”
He added: “This is crazy. I never thought it was going to last for 50 years.”
