Ahead of the release of his latest album Nibiru, which dropped over Thanksgiving weekend, Ozuna sat down with Billboard Latin executive director Leila Cobo to discuss the process of creating the record and why he took his time with it, what it was like working with a handful of other artists on the project, what inspired the title, and why he always likes to stay active.
Speaking of Nibiru, Ozuna tells Billboard that this collection of songs took a great deal of time and dedication to complete. “I traveled a lot, not just to do shows, but to meet with different producers and artists,” he says, naming the likes of Diddy, DJ Snake, Snoop Dogg, Sech, Willy and Cultura Profetica.
“I had to gather different producers and have them work with what I wanted to do, taking them away from how they normally work,” he continues. “I wanted the drums of one producer with the melodies of another producer. Putting all those things together takes time, and I didn’t have that opportunity on prior albums. On this album, fans will notice it, from beginning to end. You can see we spent a lot of time on it.”
Ozuna adds that while his last two records were released in the month of August, this time, he was more focused on releasing a good album than putting it out before it was ready.
“I wanted to take my time with it, and August was too soon,” he admits. “I had the album ready but I changed the date because I wasn’t satisfied with what I was going to give the fans. I wanted to give them my all, knowing that they were expecting a great album.”
Asked if he considers Nibiru to be a reggaeton album, Ozuna replies that it’s an urban album, and that it is a fusion of everything, from reggaeton, to trap, to dancehall and more.
As for where the title Nibiru comes from, Ozuna states that Nibiru is a concept. “Nibiru doesn’t exist,” he says. “I just used it as a concept. That’s a planet where I make my music. I make my music over there and bring it here with my entire team…I want people to not only take the musical concept, but to take with them an experience from this…I know fans will take away a great experience from this.”
He adds that the names of his albums are always chosen by one of his best friends, a producer named Yampi. “He is the one that comes up with all the concepts on all my records,” says Ozuna. “He’s come up with all three names and explained to me what they all mean.”
In the interview, Ozuna also chats about his upcoming tour and movie appearances, including Fast & Furious 9 and Tom and Jerry. Asked how he handles doing so many things at once and how he calms himself down, the singer replies, “I can never calm down!”
“I’m always active from the second I wake up,” he adds. “It’s nothing to me. It’s all about enjoying what you do, having fun with what you’re doing. Those times you’re mad, you might as well be having fun. That’s what I’m doing, enjoying it every step of the way. I’m leaving my story behind so when I’m an old man sitting at home, I can watch my videos, all my interviews, and enjoy them.”
