Ovy, the producing force behind Karol G‘s Ocean album and chart-topping hit “Tusa” with Karol G and Nicki Minaj, announced last week he had tested positive for the coronavirus through his label’s Big Ligas Instagram account. “After testing positive for coronavirus, it’s vital to understand that we have to take care of ourselves. The virus doesn’t discriminate and it’s super contagious. That’s why we should all be home and let’s all take care of each other.”
More than 400,000 COVID-19 cases have been reported in the United States and more than 1 million worldwide since the novel coronavirus started spreading on a global scale with symptoms including fever, shortness of breath and cough, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
“I didn’t know I had the virus, but then I started to feel weak mid-March and I had a headache, body aches and chills,” Ovy told Billboard. “But I kept working and thinking the mind has power and if I keep saying that I’m sick, I will feel sick, and so I didn’t let my mind go there.” He went on to finish producing Anuel AA and Karol G’s “Follow,” which dropped April 1 and was created while all three were self-isolating in their respective homes in Miami.
A few days ago, Ovy took to social media to say, “One day I will tell my kids, your dad survived the coronavirus. I’m one more survivor of the coronavirus.”
Ovy is expected to get the results from his last test in a few days and for now, he’s staying calm, with the help of his piano. “Playing the piano every morning helps me relax and writing songs on the piano, I can’t stop creating music.” He’s also remained active on social media to help promote his latest collab with TINI, “Ya No Me llames.”
Other Latin artists who have spoken out after testing positive for coronavirus include Plácido Domingo, Johnny Ventura and Morat band member Juan Pablo Villamil.
