In a display of sheer guts, 22-year-old Monica Puig won gold at the Rio Olympics, beating world No. 2 Angelique Kerber in a roller coaster, three-set final. And social media went nuts! Turns out Puig is the first Puerto Rican female athlete to win an Olympic medal and the first to win a gold. Period.
No wonder the hashtag #PicaPower become the No. 1 global trending topic.
At a time when Puerto Rico is in dire straights, besieged by the Zika virus and economic woes, Puig’s win is a breath of fresh air for the island — and for its artists.
Lin-Manuel Miranda tweeted a succession of increasingly excited messages. “PUIIIIIIIG” read one, followed by: “Pride level right now, a coqui singing Preciosa.”
And when the win came:

Salsero Victor Manuelle perhaps said it best: “Today no one is talking about politics or economics. We’re all following one BORICUA.”
