Twenty years ago today, Marco Antonio Solis‘ “Qué pena me das” reached the No.1 spot on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart.
The track spent 10 straight weeks in that position — his longest running No. 1 in his charting history. “Qué pena me das” is part of his album En pleno vuelo which reached No. 3 on Top Latin Albums in 1996.

The Billboard Latin Music Awards 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award winner boasts of nine singles to reach the No. 1 position in the Hot Latin Songs chart throughout his four-decade career including “Si te pudiera mentir,” “Más que tu amigo” and “La venia bendita,” with 21 other songs to have hit the top 10.
The Mexican singer and songwriter is currently the only Latin artist to have 12 albums reach No.1 on the Latin Album chart, yet he told Billboard, “If they asked me to give a songwriting class, I’d be a failure! I write from my heart. I can’t repress my emotions. I still like to write on paper, because I feel more in touch with the words. You see my scrawls, my corrections — and along the way, I find myself.”
