International artist and producer Maejor is on a roll. He’s worked with Justin Bieber on songs like “One Life”, “Heartbreaker”, “One Love” and “Love Me Like You Do;” with Wiz Khalifa on “Rooftops,” and most recently, with Brazilian singer Anitta on “Vai Malandra.” The song has topped Brazilian charts for months and the controversial video has over 250 million views on YouTube.
Now Maejor has teamed up with another big Brazilian artist, MC Livinho, on new single “Rebeca.” Livinho, known for hits like “Fazer Falta” and “Cheia de Marra,” famously re-mixed DJ Snake’s Justin Bieber-featuring “Let Me Love You,” performing the lyrics in Portuguese.
“I love [Brazilian] culture,” Maejor tells Billboard. “I love the people. I love the music. I love the energy. I’m so excited I’m going back to Brazil, and I’m going to be filming stuff in Brazil. I’m going to be making music with Brazilian artists forever. This is not just for one year.”
It’s been a pretty steady diet of Brazil that began through a relationship with Brazilian star Anitta, who Maejor met in Los Angeles.
“I was at a party… I knew who [Anitta] was because I’m like a big fan of funk music and everything, and she came up to me, and she said: ‘I know your song ‘Dance’.” Somehow she knew it through a friend or something, and she liked it. And I was like, ‘Oh, you’re Anitta from Brazil.’ So it was just from the music. We both just like each other’s music and then we became friends.
“I went to Brazil, and I went to her birthday party,” he continues. “And then we just started making some music. I love working with Anitta. She’s so talented. She’s so determined. I think she’s just a great artist. She’s really, really focused, and I think that she can go a long way with that.”
His meeting with MC Livinho was similarly serendipitous. “We just liked each other’s music,” says Maejor. “That’s how I like it to be — not just like set up by some label or something where the people don’t know each other. This is just from the music.”
In “Rebeca,” Maejor joins Livinho and Gerex in a blend of hip-hop and Brazilian funk. While MC Livinho sings in Portuguese, Maejor sings in English: “Baby girl, you’re moving like Beyoncé.”
Moving forward, Maejor is also working with MC Loma, MC Zaac and Tropkillaz. “I’ll do much more collaborations in Brazil. I love Brazil and I want to continue to work there. I’m working on a debut album. I’m using collaborators and musicians from around the world, different languages, different people, different cultures, and bringing it all together. And I’m also producing with Justin Bieber and Martin Garrix.”
As for Bieber? “He’s great,” says Maejor. “He’s one of the best artists… like, I think he’s just so talented. He can play instruments, he can sing. I’m grateful to work with him for so long.”
