Award-winning playwright and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, along with New York City mayor Bill de Blasio and the Hispanic Federation, spent this year’s Three Kings Day (Jan. 6) with hurricane-affected families in NYC.
Forced to uproot from their native Caribbean nation to the Big Apple in the aftermath if hurricanes Irma and Maria, East Harlem children were treated to a day of joy with gift-giving, performances, food and crafts.
One of the most important celebrations for Puerto Ricans and other Latin American communities, Three Kings Day was simultaneously commemorated in Puerto Rico (largely without electricity or running water in many parts) thanks in part to Miranda’s Toys ‘R’ Us campaign, which began to distribute more than 36,000 toys to families in need on Saturday (Jan. 6).
Miranda took to Twitter with images of festivities both stateside and on the island, where his father Luis A. Miranda, Jr. was on the grounds helping:
Thanks to partnerships AND YOU, over 36,000 kids in Puerto Rico and 3,000 kids on the mainland will be receiving gifts for 3 Kings Day…
