There is no doubt that Leslie Grace, Luis Coronel and Chiquis are the best of friends, but when it comes to being the new captains on Univision’s singing competition show, Va Por Ti, they mean business.
“We all know my team is going to win,” says Chiquis during a phone interview. Meanwhile, her now frenemies, Grace and Coronel, chime in to politely disagree saying that someone from their team will win this second season.
Billboard caught up with the three Latin stars. And while they won’t agree on a winning team, much like the contestants they are mentoring on the show, Grace, Coronel and Chiquis are treating this opportunity as a learning experience.
Tell us about your participation as captains on Va Por Ti and what the viewers can expect this season.
Chiquis: Well, I would say that this will be the best season yet. Without disrespecting the first season, of course. I get to be with people that I love and admire so much like Luis and Leslie and of course Alejandra Guzmán and Calibre 50, judges on the show. We’re going to have so much fun, but it is a reality so expect some drama as well.
You guys also started your careers not too long ago, how do you hope you can help or guide the contestants?
Grace: What we can do is show them all we have learned in these few years we have in the industry. Us three also still have a long way to go but it’s really about picking team members who we feel we can actually help and prepare them take full advantage of this opportunity. As new artists, we will learn together how to deal with the egos and different personalities in the industry.
Chiquis: Although we are also just starting, I feel that the three of us are very different and we have learned so much. That’s why I think they picked us as captains. I’ve made so many mistakes in my career and hope I can stop someone from making those same mistakes. We’re going to be very honest with the contestants.
Luis, you’re going up against such strong and powerful women. How are you feeling?
Luis: I agree with everything they say. We’re great friends but when they turn those camera lights on, the competition really starts. We’re going to fight and be demanding. But seriously, we’re going to try and help out these contestants as much as possible by telling them about our experience as new artists. We’ll help them and they’ll help us, we’ll grow together.
Did any of you ever think of joining a completion show when you began your career?
Luis: Definitely! I think for every contestant it’s a dream to be able to compete in one of these shows.
Chiquis: I think we still have that opportunity because just the other day that I sang with Gloria Trevi on Premios Juventud, she gave me a lot of tips and helps me out so much.
Va Por Ti airs Sunday’s on Univison at 8 pm ET.
