Talent runs deep in certain families. In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we spotlight 10 iconic Latin artists whose sons and daughters followed in their musical footsteps. The legacy lives on!
The 50 Most Essential Latin Albums of the Past 50 Years
Carlos Santana, Salvador Santana & Stella Santana
The rock god’s daughter, Stella, was influenced by R&B greats while his son, Salvador, is more into jazz/hip-hop with spiritual themes and the occasional psychedelic vibe. Both are authentic and passionate about their approach to music.
Hernan Hernandez of Los Tigres del Norte & Suenatron
The legendary norteño artist fathered three sons, Raúl, Mexía and Giovanni, who followed in his footsteps and formed their own band, Suenatron. New single “Caramelo” carries a fresh popteño sound (pop mixed with norteño-banda) that’s perfect for the millennial crowd.
Gloria Estefan & Emily Estefan
The original crossover queen birthed an artist who writes, records and produces her own material. A student at Berklee College of Music, Emily is currently working on her debut album, a mélange of jazz, blues, soul, and pop melodies (new single “F–k to Be” is out now). And she plays her own instruments! Watch mother and daughter harmonize beautifully at a recent benefit concert in New York City.
Vicente Fernandez & Alejandro Fernandez
There is no shortage of testosterone in the Fernandez family – or talent. Like his famous father, El Potro oozes charro-ness and we love him for it. Consider yourself lucky if you’ve witnessed them duet live.
Veronica Castro & Cristian Castro
The Mexican pop idol looks identical to his telenovela queen mother, but he also inherited her soulful vocals. Watch Cristian get emotional as he honors his famous mom with the song “Veronica.”
Antonio Aguilar and Flor Silvestre & Pepe Aguilar
One way or another, Pepe Aguilar was destined to be iconic – both of his parents were famous singers and actors. Today, he’s earned a place among the most beloved ranchera, mariachi and pop singers to ever come out of Mexico. Watch the proud father perform with his son.
The late Mexican-American icon has a unique place in musical history as a woman who broke the glass ceiling in a male-dominated genre and conquered the hearts of the people on both sides of the border. Her eldest daughter Chiquis is carrying the torch while carving her own niche in banda.
Ricardo Montaner & Evaluna
The Venezuelan icon passed on his love for God and music to his daughter Evaluna, and their Christian duet “La Gloria de Dios” is proof. Montaner’s sons Hector and Alejandro are also singers.
This gifted Spanish singer inherited not just her looks from her mother, but a powerful voice. Fittingly, Shaila often pays tribute to her late mother in concert by singing the beautiful Juan Gabriel-penned ballad “Amor Eterno”:
Pedro Infante Jr & Lupita Infante
The daughter of actor Pedro Infante Jr. and granddaughter of the great Mexican screen icon Pedro Infante Cruz, Lupita is the personification of pedigree. When her father tragically committed suicide in 2009, she dove into her music. Her debut album El Sabor de Amargura is a collection of mariachi classics from her father and abuelo.
