It was her gut feeling to follow her dream that convinced Paloma Mami to pursue a career in music — without having any guidance in the industry. It was the viral success of her independently produced single and video “Not Steady” that nabbed her a record deal with Sony Music Latin in 2018. Now, she’s ready to bring a fresh vibe to the scene.
“‘Not Steady’ is the first song I ever made in my life. It was the first time I stepped into a studio,” she tells Billboard of her Spanglish single that opened the doors for her. “My label manager at Sony discovered me in New York thanks to C.Tangana. They were both listening to my song in the car.”
Paloma Mami, whose real name is Paloma Rocío Castillo Astorga, is a New York-born Chilean artist who embraces both her cultures in her music. “Living in New York has taught me a lot about the lingo, the way we talk and the attitude. My culture and my roots in Chile have taught me my Latina spice,” she says, ultimately describing her music as Latin urban R&B with “an elegant flow.”
Although her captivating voice and beautiful features have put her on the radar, Paloma admits that she had no idea on how to launch her career. Instead, she would DM artists on Instagram asking them for advice. “I’ve loved music since I was little,” she says. “I love to sing, but I never dared to do it in front of anyone. It was like my secret passion, and when I finally decided to make a career out of this, it’s been a really good journey.”
After “Not Steady,” Paloma dropped two singles under Sony Music Latin. “No Te Enamores,” released in December, is about a girl who admits she doesn’t fall in love. “Fingías,” released in March, is about a woman who’s getting over a heartbreak. “My first two songs are upbeat, but in this song, you can hear my growth. The flow is just different and I love the message it sends,” she says of her current track.
