Regional Mexican music dominated Spotify’s streaming charts in Mexico, with three banda acts coming in as the most-streamed in the country for the past year.
Leading the fray was Julión Alvarez y su Norteño Banda, whose romantic banda songs have struck a huge chord. Here’s a macho guy who’s not afraid to cry; so much so that the video for his hit single “El amor de su vida” is about a guy in love with an ice skater — and yes, he actually sheds tears.
Following Alvarez in terms of total streams was Banda Sinaloense MS de Sergio Lizárraga, and at No. 3, La Arrolladora Banda El Limón de Rene Camacho. Slots 4 and 5 were taken by Maroon 5 and Enrique Iglesias, respectively.
The exact same lineup of acts made up the list of the five most listened to male acts in Mexico for the year.
On the women’s side, Ariana Grande led the list, followed by multi Latin Grammy winner Natalia LaFourcade, Ha*Ash, Shakira and Katy Perry in fifth place.
As Mexican as the artist lists were, four out of the five most-listened to songs of the year were mainstream tracks, beginning with No. 1 “Lean On.” It was followed by Nicky Jam and Enrique Iglesias’ “El Perdon,” Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk,” Maroon 5’s “Sugar and OMI’s “Cheerleader.”
Maybe not coincidentally, both “Cheerlader” and “Lean On” have remixes with Latin artsits: Nicky Jam and J Bavin, respectively.
As far as the most streamed albums, Alvarez again reigned, with his Lecciones para el corazón and El aferrado coming in at 1 and 2 in the list of most-listened to albums. The Weekend and Major Lazer came in at 3 and 4 and Lafourcade’s Hasta la raiz came in at No. 5.
There was one surprise among the lists: The five “most viral” songs in Mexico were “Cheerleader,” “I Don’t Like It,” “Hotline Bling” and, in a tie, “Can’t Feel My Face” And “Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae). In the middle of that, romantic pop chanteuse Yuridia at No. 2 — yep, No. 2 — with “Ya es muy tarde.”
It’s a big fan kudos for the former reality show contestant with the big voice. Here is Spotify’s full listing, in Spanish:
