The former Yankees player proposed to Lopez just over two years later, in March 2019, while the pair was on vacation in the Bahamas. They announced their engagement on social media with a romantic pic of J.Lo’s gargantuan, 25-carat diamond ring.
Their wedding plans had to be pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic, and now it looks like the ceremony won’t happen at all.
Below, take a look back at A-Rod and J. Lo’s love story, from the moment they met on her home turf in the Bronx to their reported breakup.
May 2005: Jenny From the Block Meets the Yankee
Lopez and then-husband Marc Anthony stopped by the Subway Series, the baseball showdown between New York’s two teams, the Yankees — which boasted Rodriguez as one of their star players — and the Mets. Lopez and Anthony met Rodriguez at the plate and posed for a photo opp before the game.
February 2017: Reconnection
When they met, Lopez was married, as was Rodriguez; those marriages ended in 2008 (his) and 2012 (hers), but they didn’t spark a romance until 12 years after that initial hello at Shea Stadium. On an April 2017 episode of Ellen, Lopez got grilled by the daytime TV host about her new man, and the topic turned to their first date. Lopez walked through their reconnection, which took place at a restaurant when she bumped into him and said hello. He followed up with a dinner invite, and the rest is history.
March-May 2017: Public Displays of Affection
In addition to her blushing and gushing on Ellen, the spring of 2017 saw plenty of J.Lo and A-Rod’s new romance. In March, Rodriguez happily confirmed they were dating to the hosts of The View, saying that they’d been having a “great time” and showering compliments on his girlfriend: “She’s an amazing, amazing girl, one of the smartest human beings I’ve ever met, and also an incredible mother.”
After that, the couple stepped out in public, making their debut together in May at the Met Gala red carpet in New York City, where Lopez stunned in a beautiful blue Valentino gown.
June 2017: It’s Instagram Official
Lopez’s twins, Max and Emme, and Rodriguez’s daughters, Ella and Natasha, joined them in the pool for a snapshot of Sunday family fun that the singer proudly shared on social media. (Around the same time, Rodriguez talked up his girlfriend and her “brilliant business mind,” telling ET, “I like that for my daughters and Jennifer is the role model.”) Also on the ‘gram that month: a slideshow from the couple’s romantic vacation in France.
November-December 2017: Their First Holiday Season Together
The pair’s blended family celebrated the holidays together, with their kids rocking matching flannel pajamas the night before Thanksgiving and Lopez posting photos in an Instagram story of Rodriguez helping her children decorate the Christmas tree.
February 2018: It’s Been a Wonderful, Whirlwind Year
Lopez spoke about her relationship with Rodriguez in another interview with ET, pointing out that the two had been together for about a year — and that their year had been great. “What was I doing one year ago today?” she said. “I was with Alex. We had just met and, you know, it was good. It was a good night.”
She continued: “It’s crazy. We both are so happy about our lives right now and where we’re at professionally, as well as personally. You know. Just things seem to be flowing in a really beautiful way. We both have a lot of support for each other and a lot of love for each other.”
April 2018: The Couple Shines on Another Red Carpet
Lopez was honored as one of the most influential people at the Time 100 Gala, where she arrived on the red carpet with her sister Lynda and mom Guadalupe — as well as boyfriend Rodriguez.
August 2018: A-Rod’s Eyes Were Only for J. Lo at the VMAs
Rodriguez was the ultimate supportive partner to Lopez at the MTV Video Music Awards — on the red carpet and during the ceremony, where she was honored with the Video Vanguard Award and performed a career-spanning medley of her hits. Pre-show, he was spotted snapping pictures of his girlfriend looking gorgeous on the red carpet. During her live set, he was caught looking on with appreciation, filming her with his phone as she shimmied onstage.

November 2018: Ellen Gets Things Going
Lopez chatted about her and A-Rod’s relationship with Ellen DeGeneres, who teased her about their potential plans to wed. “So you’ll be getting married?” DeGeneres prompted. “I don’t know,” said Lopez at the time. “I don’t know.”
“You should, because y’all seem very happy,” the host suggested. (Once news of their actual engagement came, Ellen commented on J.Lo’s Instagram: “Yes. I’ll be your Maid of Honor.”)
December 2018: A Teary-Eyed Tribute to Her Beau
J.Lo got emotional as she revealed what she adores about Rodriguez to Jimmy Fallon during an appearance on The Tonight Show.
“He’s come into my life and really contributed in such a way. He’s like, ‘Shine…’ Some people try to like dull you down, or you know, squish you down, and he’s so not like that. It’s just so refreshing,” she gushed, her eyes beginning to water.
February 2019: Love Notes on Their Two-Year Anniversary
The lovebirds shared all their feelings on Instagram as they celebrated two years together.
Lopez wrote: “Two years of laughter. Two years of fun. Two years of adventures. Of excitement of growing and learning. Of true friendship. And so much love!! You make my world a more beautiful safe and stable place… in the midst of our ever-changing, ever-moving life… you make me feel like a teenager starting out all over again… Every time I think I have you pegged, you surprise me in the most wonderful ways reminding me how blessed I am to have found you now in this moment at this time… our time… Te Amo Macho.”
Rodriguez’s anniversary note was even longer: “I can’t believe it’s been two years,” he began. “Only 730 days, which have flown by, but it feels like we have been together forever. We are meant to be, and how much you mean to me cannot be put into words.”
“From baseball games, to traveling across the world to shows in Vegas, he wrote. “We have done it all together and every moment with you is cherished. Where this road will take us next is unknown but there is no one else I would rather have by my side. The journey is just beginning and I am excited for what’s ahead. Macha, your hard work is unmatched. Your relentless drive and determination push me to be a better man each and every day.”
He continued: “Like you there is none other. Words will never do justice to what the last two years have meant to me. Thank you for always being you, for your unwavering support and unconditional love.”
March 2019: She Said Yes!
A romantic getaway at a Bahamas beach turned into an engagement for Lopez and Rodriguez. The couple both offered a look at J.Lo’s exquisite ring to share the happy news of their plans to marry on Instagram.
September 2019: Engagement Party
Lopez and Rodriguez celebrate their engagement with a lavish party surrounded by loved ones. “So great celebrating with family and close friends last night,” Rodriguez wrote on Instagram, while Lopez gushed that it was the “most beautifully elegant night.”
February 2020: No. 1 Fan at the Super Bowl
Rodriguez cheered on his fiancée’s Super Bowl halftime performance, writing on Twitter, “AMAZING!! She ABSOLUTELY CRUSHED IT! Wow, that was so fun! I’m so proud of you, Jen!” In a video, he can be seen singing along, yelling and dancing with all of his might — essentially, freaking out like any J.Lo fan would.

May 2020: Wedding Postponed
Lopez chats with Today host Hoda Kotb about having to hold off on their special day due to the coronavirus pandemic. “There’s no planning right now. You just have to kind of wait and see how this all plays out,” Lopez says, adding, “I’m a little heartbroken because we did have some great plans, but I’m also like, ‘You know what? God has a bigger plan.’ And so we just have to wait and see. Maybe it’s going to be better. I have to believe that it will be.”
June 2020: Black Lives Matter March
The couple joins country-wide protesters, taking to the streets with Black Lives Matter marchers in Los Angeles. “Today I had Emme and Max make me and Alex a sign for the protest,” Lopez shared on Instagram. “We talked about how if one person doesn’t have justice then no one does. That this country was built on the belief of freedom and justice for all. We must take a stand for what we believe in and fight against the injustices in this world. So we continue to peacefully protest until there is change.”
August 2020: Their Mets Bid Is Withdrawn
After leading a group of investors to buy the New York Mets franchise, Lopez and Rodriguez announce they’re withdrawing their bid. “Alex and I are so disappointed!!” Lopez writes on Instagram. “We worked so hard the past 6 months with the dream of becoming the first minority couple and the first woman owner to buy her father’s favorite Major League Baseball team with her own hard earned money. We still haven’t given up!!”
January 2021: President Biden’s Inauguration
Rodriguez gushed over Lopez’s performance at President Biden and Vice President Harris’ inauguration. “I can’t stop thinking about Wednesday and Jen’s performance at #Inauguration2021,” he tweeted alongside of a photo of the couple on a private jet on their way home from the historic event. “It was such an iconic moment — one I’ll never forget. I can’t express how proud I am of her and how privileged I felt just to be in attendance. It truly was awe-inspiring and so patriotic.”
On the flight home, she showed me her lyrics sheet, and the significance of her performance really began to sink in. Can you believe she was the first person to sing in Spanish at an inaugural event? @JLo

March 2021: The Engagement Is Off?
According to reports on March 12, 2021, the couple called off their engagement. But less than 24 hours after the news broke, J.Lo and A-Rod released a joint statement announcing that they’re staying together. “We are working through some things,” Lopez and Rodriguez said in a joint statement obtained by People. The stars also tell TMZ, “All the reports are inaccurate.”
April 2021: Engagement Officially Ends
Just weeks after saying that they were trying to work things out, the couple issued a joint statement on April 15 confirming that they have officially called off their engagement.”We have realized we are better as friends and look forward to remaining so. We will continue to work together and support each other on our shared businesses and projects,” the pair said in an exclusive statement to the Today Show. “We wish the best for each other and one another’s children. Out of respect for them, the only other comment we have is to say is thank you to everyone who has sent kind words and support.”
