The artist known as Helado Negro has released an animated video for his timely single “Young, Latin and Proud.”
The track by the artist known for his Alt Latin electronic soundscapes has some of the soulful “suavecito” vibe of Chicano rock ballads by Malo, El Chicano and other groups of the past. With lyrics mostly in English and a slow groove backing hypnotic vocals, it speaks to today’s dream believers and beyond, with roots in the personal story of the bilingual musician, who was born to Ecuadorian parents, raised in Florida and currently lives in Brooklyn.
“My interest in creating this song was always a private one, a possible dialog between me and a very young me,” says Helado Negro, whose real name is Roberto Carlos Lange. “Singing me to sleep after a long day, letting me know that it’s okay to be young, Latin and proud.”
The spare, rainbow-colored animation by a Portland artists’ collective matches the meditative mood of the quietly empowering song.
Helado Negro opens for the group Brazilian Girls on a tour that hits New York’s Highline Ballroom tomorrow (Aug. 6), then goes to Baltimore, DC, Cincinnati and Kansas City.
