Futbol Club Barcelona has debuted its new team kit, featuring a jersey patterned with square rather than the former stripes and sporting a triangle with the colors of the Catalan flag at the neckline. The new Nike kit was announced in a spot with music by dance music duo Area21 (Martin Garrix and Maejor).
Catalan drummer Marc Ayza makes a cameo in the video, an homage to Barcelona that captures Barça players and “people whose talent has contributed to the city’s progress and the community.” They include trap band SamxSen, as well as scientists Laura Soucek and Marie Beaulie, researcher Diana Ballart, artist Albert Barqué, young chef Carlota Claver, photographer Berta Vicente and model Candela Capitán.
The new pattern of red and blue squares was inspired by the Eixample, the urbanistic grid of square blocks that is the core of downtown Barcelona (and the area best known to tourists for its Gaudi landmarks.)
“The kit is something new and exciting,” says Barça’s Gerard Piqué. “It might be different but it is 100 per cent Barca and it is even better that the design represents the bond the club has with the supporters and the people who are driving the city forward.”
