
One of the most highly awaited awards at the Latin Grammys is always best new artist. This year, the coveted title went out to Venezuelan singer Nella, who beat out rising nominees such as Paulo Londra, Greeicy, Cami and Aitana.
After receiving the golden gramophone from Angela Aguilar, De La Ghetto and Rudy Mancuso at the 20th annual ceremony, Nella thanked her family, her producer and mentor, Javier Limon, and her country for her accolade. “This is for everyone who, like me, comes from another country looking for new opportunities.”
Nella, who is a New York-based singer and Berklee College of Music graduate, joins previous titleholders including Karol G, Vicente Garcia and Manuel Medrano.

Defining Nella’s Music
“Her music,” according to her website, “is a meeting place for her country’s folklore roots, the influence of her contemporaries, and the music of the Andalusian region.” Nella likes to compare her sound to Monsieur Perine and Natalia Lafourcade.
Her Biggest Mentor
During her speech, Nella thanked her mentor, Grammy and Latin Grammy-winning producer Javier Limón. She later expressed her gratitude on Instagram sharing a throwback photo of the two from 2013. “Living example that work, focus, passion, and love for what you do gives results. That’s what I learned from you, Javi. Thank you for trusting and believing in me,” she posted.
Nella on the Big Screen
Nella is part of Oscar winner Asghar Farhadi’s film Todos Lo Saben, which opened the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. In the movie, which stars Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz, she sings songs written by Limón exclusively for the film.
Her Debut Album
Nella’s debut album, Voy, was released on May 31, comprised of music and production by Javier Limon. She’s signed by IMG/Casa Limón Records.
