Enrique Bunbury, the emblematic Spanish rocker known for his distinctive voice and enduring career, will be the latest Latin artist to have an MTV Unplugged. Bunbury will perform the acoustic set in Mexico City on Sept 1. The show is set to air on MTV Latin America on Nov. 26, and will include as-yet-unannounced guests.
Bunbury was first widely recognized in Spain and Latin America as the frontman for the ’80s band Los Heroes de Silencio, where he immediately stood out for his deep vocals, goth style, and a dramatic stage presence; he has cited David Bowie and Elvis Presley as influences.
The singer/songwriter has recorded multiple live sets and seven solo studio albums since Los Heroes split up in 1996. Those include Licenciado Cantinas, a recording of Latin classics with Mexican flavor. Earlier this year, he released a live collaboration with another Latin rock veteran, Argentina’s Andres Calamaro.
“The public changes, and there are some artists who are able to stay relevant, and other artists who just don’t connect with a new generation,” Bunbury said, talking about his own staying power in a Billboard interview when he released his last solo studio album, 2013’s Palosanto. “There are few artists who can make that connection with different generations.”
The MTV Unplugged franchise has a long and successful history with diverse Latin artists, including Café Tacvba, Julieta Venegas, Juanes, Soda Stereo, Zoe and Los Tigres del Norte.
