Actor-singer Diego Boneta stopped to chat with Billboard’s Griselda Flores and Justino Aguila at the Billboard Latin Music Awards on Thursday, discussing his current role starring as the title character in the Telemundo television series Luis Miguel.
Speaking of the response the show has received so far, Boneta says that it has been “incredible” to see such warm reactions from both the press and the audience, in both Latin America and the U.S.
“It was something that we all put a lot of time, blood, sweat and tears into for the past two years,” he says. “It took me a year to just prep for the project, and then another year to shoot it, and it’s quite amazing to see this positive, warm reaction.”
Boneta shares that while this is the “role of a lifetime,” it was very difficult to prepare for the role for several reasons. “Acting-wise, it’s such a complex character who is an icon that everyone knows,” he explains. “I’m getting to humanize this living legend, cause no one really knows anything about him.”
“Then everything else, on the physical side of things, there’s a lot of challenges,” the actor adds. “The tooth gap, the tanning; I dropped like 20 pounds. And then on the singing side, that was I think probably the biggest challenge, cause I had to sound like someone who wasn’t me, and that someone happens to be one of the best singers alive…it was like almost learning to sing again just for this role.”
