Danny Gokey didn’t pass any of his Spanish classes in school but when it comes to singing in español, he passes with high honors. The former American Idol premieres his second single, “La esperanza frente a mí,” exclusively on Billboard. The song is from his first all-Spanish album to be released this Friday.
The Milwaukee-born artist, whose first encounter with Spanish tunes was when singing religious songs with his Christian band, won third place on Idol’s season 8 and has since then charted on the Billboard Hot 100 and in 2014 reached No. 1 on the Christian Albums with Hope In Front of Me.
Gokey says his new Spanish album is a collection of songs that “defined his life” and have become the soundtrack to his mission. The track list includes Spanish versions of his hits like “Better Than Gold (La joya más especial)” and “Tell Your Heart To Beat Again (Que tu corazón vuelva a latir),” which is dedicated to his late wife who died during heart surgery in 2009.
