Daddy Yankee has officially kicked off his European tour, already visiting Belgium and Spain. Over the weekend, the reggaeton star surprised fans with a reunion that could easily be marked as one for the books, inviting to the stage DJ Playero, the first producer to ever work with Yankee back in the ’90s.
“We started from zero in the ‘hood with something way more valuable than money: the vision to be big,” Yankee later posted on Instagram. “Don’t let anyone take that away from you!”
DJ Playero (real name Pedro Gerardo Torruelas) was a key figure in the formative period of reggaeton during the early ’90s. He produced a series of mixtapes, experimenting with hip-hop, reggae and Spanish-language freestyle.
At the concert, and with his arm around the Puerto Rican DJ, Daddy Yankee shared the story of how Playero was the first person to open the doors for him, debuting on the mixtape Playero 34 released in 1991. “It is an honor to meet with Daddy Yankee in Europe and to go up to the stage with him,” Playero posted on Instagram.
Daddy Yankee’s European tour will make the rounds in Zurich, Paris, Krakow, Milan, London and Ibiza before wrapping in Tel Aviv, Israel, on June 26.
