Mexican artists and other celeb fans of the team were out in full force on Twitter and Instagram to rally for their team to beat Brazil and go the quarter finals of the World Cup. But it was not to be; Brazil’s 1-0 lead became 2-0 late in the game.
Still, Mexico’s legendary patriotism was in full display throughout. Even last night (July 1), fans in Moscow were so enthusiastic that team captain Rafa Marquez had to actually go outside his hotel and ask them to simmer down so the team could rest (though he was sure to thank them for their support).
On the morning of the July 2 game, the passion lived on, with stars like Alejandro Fernandez taking to social media: “Thanks for carrying on your shoulders the passion of millions!”
After the loss, there was a clearly torn Gloria Trevi, whose son was born in Brazil. On her Instagram, mother and son posed for a photo with the Mexican and Brazilian flags painted on their respective faces. Even Oprah rallied for Mexico, but alas.
There were no hard feelings, though. “With your heads held high, boys,” Alejandra Guzman tweeted.
