Before becoming the Billboard Latin Music Awards in 1994, the first iteration of the awards began more than 30 years go in 1989 when Billboard joined forces with Univision to produce Premios Lo Nuestro A La Musica Latina during the Latin Music Conference.
Five years later, the show officially launched as how we know them today, with Gloria Estefan as the night’s top winner taking home multiple awards. Enrique Iglesias snagged his first Latin Music Award for his self-titled debut album in 1996, and, over his career, he would go on to become the most decorated artist in the award’s history with 48 total wins.
As for the female artist with the most wins? That’s Colombian star Shakira with a total of 41 awards. Marc Anthony and Luis Fonsi are tied as the artists who have performed the most times. Both have taken the stage a total of 11 times.
Most recently, Anthony performed “Pa’ Allá Voy” at the 2021 Billboard Latin Music Awards, which took place Thursday, Sept. 23, in Miami. This year, Bad Bunny scored 10 wins including artist of the year award. See the complete list of winners here.
