Becky G participated in a Billboard Latin Music Week panel with Karol G and Yuridia on Wednesday (April 25), during which they discussed being Latino women in the music industry and the importance of their heritage.
“I know so many of my cousins that don’t speak a lick of Spanish,” Becky G says, “but we’re so proud of our culture and where we come from…For me, as a young Latina in the music industry and facing all of these obstacles…there’s no short cuts. Whatever you want to go for, it’s not gonna be easy.”
“Going back to my roots, I admire people like my grandparents because of the sacrifice that they made for their families,” she continues, adding that it wasn’t just one sacrifice, but instead one after the other. As time goes by, she sees those sacrifices paying off, and it forces her to realize that it is her responsibility to use her platform to help the next generation. “It’s really made me who I am as a person,” she adds.
“I look at my grandfathers, and I look at their hands,” Becky G continues. “They were gardeners, they were painters. They did whatever it is that they had to do. They were the busboys washing dishes in the back of the restaurants. And that to me…as a Latina and an actress too, I don’t wanna audition just to be the maid or the nanny. No, I wanna be more than that, but it’s acknowledging that that is where we come from and there’s no shame in that. It’s amazing that we’ve come this far.”
