Women in the music industry have always had a more difficult path when it comes to achieving success. This year, the Billboard Latin Music Conference brought that topic to a discussion with leaders from the Latin industry.
Singer/actress Becky G, singer/songwriter Karol G, Mexican singer Yuridia, Spotify’s Head of Global Music Culture Rocio Guerrero, Lionfish Entertainment’s Rebecca Leon and Stacy L. Smith, the Founder/Director of Annenberg Inclusion Initiative for the Women In Lead were all present on a panel moderated by Billboard’s Griselda Flores.
The discussion began by questioning Becky G, Karol G and Yuridia about what being a Latina artist means in 2018. The artists agreed that they are in an era where they have established themselves to work as a team, either with men or women, after having to show that they really had the talent and power to be successful.
Latinas in the music industry are now breaking barriers with the help of executive leaders in different areas of the industry such as Rocio Guerrero, who realized there was a lack of women on Spotify Latin music playlists. There’s also Rebecca Leon, who with her knowledge of management and events, was able to unite two female Mexican superstars, Alejandra Guzman and Gloria Trevi, for one of the most successful tours.
However, the statistics remain low, and the issue requires immediate action in order to increase the numbers. According to a study done by Dr. Stacy L. Smith, in a sampling of 150 songs on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart between 2015-2017, on average, female solo artists only occupied six percent of the chart.
The panel was created to raise awareness so that more women join the movement, which aims to seek equality for an industry that is dominated by men. Now, women have join forces and begun to look for strategies that can benefit them as artists.
Women began to resurface on the Latin charts in 2017, and today’s challenge is to grow that number. In order to make that happen, they’ll need help from everyone — male and female artists alike.
